Our Inspiration

Dear Readers,

The Gathering Place is a book about openness and kindness. It demonstrates to readers that our individual words and actions matter, and have a direct impact on those around us. 

The story is inspired by our daughter Sophie, who passed away in 2019. Sophie never judged others for their feelings; instead, she chose to relate to children and adults alike by meeting them where they were emotionally. Whether they were happy, sad, lonely or disappointed, Sophie would engage with them in a way that felt personal and meaningful.  This unique superpower allowed so many different individuals to feel welcome in her presence, leading to unexpected smiles and laughter along the way.

Sophie even found ways to bring happiness into the hospital! She would wear beautiful princess costumes or her own special pair of scrubs to deliver snacks, toys and games to everyone she met. Her warm smile and sparkling eyes would light up any room she entered, room and always made those around her feel special. She will forever be our extraordinary “Sprinkle” that taught us how to engage with others in the most genuine way possible. 

We invite you to join us on this journey of kindness through The Gathering Place’s silly characters, funny rhymes, and beautiful themes. We hope the book’s message will help each reader continue to spread the same joy that Sophie was able to share in her short life. May this book inspire all of us to create our own Gathering Places wherever we go.
